San Jose City Council Split 4-4 on Divestment
THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES ✊️🔥
Campaign Update: San Jose City Council Split 4-4 on Divestment
At the March 24th City Council meeting, dozens of San Jose community members gave public comment demanding that the San Jose City Council divest from genocide & ICE. The city currently has over $115 million invested in corporations that work with Israel and ICE.
Councilmembers Ortiz and Kamei put forward a memorandum that would ban future investments in Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet, an important first step in the struggle for ethical investment.
In the final vote, four councilmembers voted yes on this memorandum:
Ortiz, Kamei, Candelas, and Campos. We thank them for listening to their constituents and standing on the right side of history.
Four councilmembers voted no
on the memorandum: Casey, Mulcahy, Cohen, and Tordillos. As ICE terrorizes our immigrant neighbors, and Israel murders tens of thousands of innocent Palestinians, these councilmembers remain complicit.
San Jose residents have made it clear that we will not allow our city funds to be invested in genocide or ICE.
This vote is not the end of the struggle for divestment – instead, it has lit a fire under us to fight even harder and hold councilmembers Casey, Mulcahy, Cohen, and Tordillos accountable.
